Street View Imagery of Canada’s Arctic comes to Google Maps

When we visited Canada’s far north in August we worked with the residents of Cambridge Bay to help them improve the map of Canada’s north using Google Map Maker. We also collected Street View imagery of this isolated Nunavut hamlet. A Cambridge Bay elder, Anna Nahogaloak, told us that it was important for the Inuit people to contribute to Google’s map of the Arctic. “The land is everybody’s land,” she told us. “And we all share it.”
Well, thanks to the nonprofit Nunavut Tunngavik Inc and the people of Cambridge Bay, we can now share this amazing land with the world. Just three months since our trip north, we're proud to publish the photos and show off the map they have made.
You can explore this tiny hamlet for yourself, and better understand what it's like to live up in the north. Walk down Omingmak Street, or make your way the bridge (where locals fish for Arctic Char), and out to the Old Stone Church. See some Arctic souvenirs in the Arctic Closet, or visit the Ice Hockey and Curling Arena (which isn't insulated and freezes over once they flood it in the winter!) Learn about Inuit culture and the far north at the Kitimeot Heritage Society or the Arctic Coast Visitors Centre. There is so much to explore, and now that winter is coming, you can do it all from the comfort (and warmth) of your armchair.

Google Maps now includes new and updated Street View imagery from across Canada. In our effort to build the world’s most accurate, comprehensive and user-friendly map, we have driven thousands of kilometers of public streets, roads and paths across Canada, showcasing the beauty and splendour of our great country.
Please visit the Street View homepage to learn more about where Street View is available, the fleet of Street View vehicles, and to view amazing Street View imagery from museums and natural wonders from around the world. As always, we are conscious that Canadians value their privacy and security. In addition to automatically blurring any faces and legible license plates found in our images, we continue to offer very simple tools to help Canadians request further blurring if they wish.
